Hospice UK tie-up brings GDPR insights to sector

donorflex joined forces with Hospice UK for a series of four one-day events focussed on the impact that the General Data Protection Regulation will have on the way hospices manage their data and communications with staff, patients and supporters.

Our sponsorship of the four key dates renewed a relationship that has its roots in the hospice movement’s pioneering days of the early 1990s.

The programme was led by data protection specialist Kitty Rosser, Senior Associate – Intellectual Property at Birketts LLP, who:

  • Positioned GDPR against current data protection law
  • Introduced the main features of GDPR
  • Helped delegates build a compliance plan
  • Used case studies to assist fundraising and clinical staff to identify the challenges of the new legislation and their everyday work

The donorflex team, led by Client Development Consultant Jo Davies, held special surgeries with delegates to complement Kitty’s insights by:

  • Feeding in our experiences as a barometer of hospices’ needs and anxieties on the subject of preferences, and
  • Offering the best-practice guidance of a database supplier that spends all day of every day working with charities to manage their supporter data in a diligent and consistent way that allows them to meet their statutory obligations and – most importantly – to provide great supporter care

“Hospice UK are delighted to have the generous support of CRM specialist donorflex on this essential GDPR training for hospice staff across the UK in October and December 2017,” Hospice UK’s Director of Income Generation, Catherine Bosworth, said before the four-date run opened in October.

“donorflex have a wealth of experience and expertise working with many hospices. We are very pleased that donorflex are sponsoring what promises to be ‘must-attend’ courses for hospice professionals wanting to prepare for the regulatory changes on the horizon.”

That delight was echoed by donorflex’s managing director, Brian Todd.

"It’s been a natural step for us to play a part in events like these,” he says. "We go a long, long way back with Hospice UK as an organisation, to when they began life as Help the Hospices and set out to champion and support the sector’s challenge in delivering the best possible care, both for those living with terminal or life-limiting conditions, and for their families.

"The challenges of the coming years will be as great as any we’ve seen in almost 30 years serving the hospice sector. Understanding what’s required, in terms of data protection, consent and preferences, is a massive part of charity teams building their confidence moving forward.

"Our primary role – whether that’s at an event like Hospice UK’s GDPR seminar or any other occasion – is to underscore that great data management is the key to success."

GDPR dates were...

  • Wednesday, October 18: Woburn House, London
  • Wednesday, October 25: Marie Curie Hospice, Glasgow
  • Friday, October 27: St Gemma’s Hospice, Leeds
  • Friday, December 8: Sid Watkins Room, Liverpool
